All users are accustomed to using their web browser's ''Back Button'' [img[http://vp.openlabyrinth.ca/files/back_button.gif]] for retreating from a hyperlink or choice made. The same step is available to players of OpenLabyrinth cases.
However, users should be aware that OpenLabyrinth still tracks such actions and logs when you back up like this. Normally, this does not matter at all. But in certain situations, this can be important.
For ''exam situations'', you will be informed if this is not allowed. Also in certain cases which have complex [[Counters]] and ''Counter Rules'' in place, using the Back Button can mess up how the game behaves.
''Counters'' are a very simple scoring and tracking system, used by OpenLabyrinth.
Usually, they are just simple numbers, used to display such things as points gained for good choices, simple physiological parameters such as heart rate, or they may be more complex items, determining what paths you are offered in the game design.
OpenLabyrinth pages are pretty simple in concept - mostly, they are plain web pages, with hyperlinks to take from area of the case to the next. Take a look a this simple page example for where to generally look for clues as to what to do next.

While there may be choices at each stage as to what to do, you still essentially follow a single path from beginning to end. For example, from ''History'', through ''Examination'', ''Investigations'', ''Diagnosis'' to ''Treatment (Rx)'' - this is sometimes referred to as a ''HEIDR'' design.
''OpenLabyrinth'' allows case authors to create linear cases like this, but it also allows more complex branching designs with multiple paths and endings. Good case design should not be confusing but it is harder to author a non-linear case, and complex branched case is more likely to be challenging or confusing. But we feel that this is more life-like: when you make decisions about a real case, nobody jumps out with a little red flag to tell you that you just made a poor decision. Life moves on and consequences arise. Well designed virtual patient cases can do that too.

In OpenLabyrinth, one small feature that makes pages a wee bit more interactive is the use of embedded QUestions.
These are simple list of linked options, usually shown as a list of "radio-button" choices. If you click on a choice, you get simple immediate feedback about whether this choice was correct or not.
QUestions can affect your scores on your [[Counters]].
We have written the word "QUestions" in this manner because of how they are referred to within the OpenLabyrinth code.
In the near future, we hope to provide more flexible styles of QUestions, with a greater variety of choices.
At the bottom of most pages in OpenLabyrinth cases, you will see a link named ''Review your pathway''.
This is a quick way of going back to any point in the case you are currently playing. This can be useful to see where you have been and what choices you have made previously.
Occasionally, for some more complex cases where [[Counters]] are being used, this can mess up the internal scoring for a case. But usually, there is no downside to using this way of retracing your steps.
Some skins may have this ''Review your pathway'' disabled.
OpenLabyrinth uses ''Sections'' as a way of providing shortcuts to various segments or nodes within a case.
In the generic OpenLabyrinth page layout (or skin), ''Section'' headings are in the top right corner of the page.
Simply click on the ''Section'' headings to jump to the relevant area.
