How to perform coniotomyUsing Quicktrach I set for coniotomy. An incision by scalpel isn't necessary, opening is made by needle from coniotomy set. Initially, point the needle perpendicular to trachea. Insert the needle through the skin and cricothyroid membrane. Correct needle position can be verificated by aspirating air bubbles into syringe with normal saline (some instructions state that it is not necessary to put any liquid into the syringe). When air bubbles appear, do not insert the needle deeper (no bigger amount of blood should be present in the syringe during aspiration). Then pull out the needle and release red safety stopper (safety stopper reduces the chance of perforating the posterior wall of the trachea), tilt the cannula towards the mandible and insert deeper. Cannula is connected to ambubag through the connector. For cannula fixation in the correct position is used fixation band. |
