Background Information

Our patient, Jordan, is a 25-year-old male who has been unknowingly been living with cannabis-induced schizophrenia for roughly three years, with symptoms progressively worsening throughout the last year. Jordan started using marijuana at 16 and quickly began to love the feeling it provided him as he felt he became more imaginative and creative in his hobbies of reading, writing, and drawing. Jordan graduated grade 12; however, his grades significantly dropped off during his last year. He has since lost touch with his hobbies as his use increased and illness progressed. Jordan also ruined connections and lost his job at a local FedEx that his father had helped him obtain, putting a strain on Jordan's relationship with his parents. He has been unemployed for six months.

Jordan lived with his parents and three siblings until two months ago when he was kicked out of the family home. Jordan's parents chose to kick him out due to actively smoking marijuana in front of his younger family members, in addition to increased disruptive behavior associated with some strange thoughts. After being kicked out of his family home, Jordan talked to friends only when he needed money, as he no longer had his family to provide for him. Due to this, Jordan lost many of his remaining friends. In addition, Jordan's thoughts were disturbed in a way that made it increasingly more difficult for him to tell what was real or not. Jordan was brought to the emergency department at 0835 when the police found him in the middle of a freeway. When questioned by police officers, Jordan stated, "the voices are telling me I needed to be here." Jordan was diagnosed with schizophrenia by a psychiatrist and was admitted formally to a psychiatric unit.
