Explanation

You ask Mum if she thinks the party food included nuts.

'Yes, I think there were nuts, crisps, biscuits......all the usual things you get at a party' she replies.

As the nurse is finishing her observations you ask some further questions. You find out that Tom is generally well, but has asthma which is managed by his GP.

He has only had one previous admission for asthma 2 years ago. He has a 'blue inhaler' which he takes whenever he gets wheezy, but is not on any regular medications and has had all his immunisations.

The nurse hands you her chart:

  • Weight: 20.3 kg
  • Temperature: 36.8 degrees
  • Heart rate: 102
  • BP: 95/53
  • Cap refill: 2 seconds
  • Respiratory rate: 30
  • Oxygen saturations in air: 97%

You examine Tom, but he is still crying and tries to kick you. Despite this you manage to determine that his chest is clear and his heart sounds are normal.

'I think his rash is getting worse' says Mum
