Blended simulation

In many of our projects, we have found that OpenLabyrinth acts as an excellent linking tool in bridging together various simulation modalities. Because of the open architecture, use of open standards and protocols, OpenLabyrinth is very adept at connecting various systems and platforms. Indeed, we fondly refer to it as 'contextual glue'.

This bridging occurs at the levels of both educational design and data analytics. The most important aspect of this is the ability to objectively assess what the learner is actually doing, as they move across the various learning tools and resources incorporated into the scenario. The Experience API (xAPI) plays a key role in sending activity stream data to a Learning Record Store (LRS).

Here are some project examples where we have used this blended simulation approach:… opens in new tab -- you can close these tabs when done.

  • Virtual Spinal Tap - uses haptic simulation to model the feeling of needle insertion
  • Rushing Roulette - timed tasks with a $30 Arduino lie detector!
  • Crevasse Rescue - multiple teams & disciplines, with high & low fidelity simulators
  • R. Ed Nekke - bookending around Laerdal mannequin scenario
