Introduction

This simulated learning experience is designed to develop therapeutic communication with a school-aged child (ages 8-12 years-old) during a family interview and to outline professional obligations for reporting domestic violence. Remember, school-aged refers to those approximately ages 8-12 years-old and adolescents are considered 13-17. The learning objectives for this scenario are as follows:

  1. Learners will review and display skills of therapeutic communication related to engaging with a school-aged child and setting appropriate boundaries in conversations concerning domestic violence.
  2. Learners will be able to prioritize and carry out a safety assessment for a school-aged child experiencing domestic violence.
  3. Learners will reflect on their experience as a healthcare worker reporting domestic violence involving a school-aged child, how those feelings could be related to personal beliefs, and ways to manage those emotions.

Learners will be able to identify the proper steps and necessary resources of reporting domestic violence, and appropriately apply the principles of interprofessional communication while carrying this out.
