Realistic

We all know that in the real world, we are never handed the information we need to solve a clinical problem on a silver platter.

Realistic case design involves any or all of the following: parsing information, including both relevant and irrelevant information, tempting distractors, & unexpected events. All elements of design have potential for positive and negative impact on learning. Realism may improve transfer and engagement in some cases, however, it can also introduce elements of frustration & fatigue. Careful consideration of each element is warranted and further research is required in the area of case design specifics. (Bateman et al. 2013)
