Introduction

In this scenario, learners will have the opportunity to assess and manage care for an adult who has schizophrenia with paranoid delusions, and is experiencing a dystonic reaction. Learners will conduct an initial and focused assessment as well as recognize abnormal findings. The simulation will occur during a day shift on an in-patient psychiatric unit.

By the end of this scenario, learners will be able to:

  • Introduce themselves & correctly identify the patient
  • Uses therapeutic communication to engage the patient and complete nursing care
  • Conducts initial and focused assessments including MSE and recognizes abnormal findings
  • Reassess V/S including respiratory assessment to rule out allergic reaction to medications
  • Recognizes signs of EPS and selects appropriate interventions
  • Identifies when to call the physician and communicates pertinent information using the ISBSARR format
  • Chooses the appropriate medication and time to administer medication to the patient
