The old head mirror

We may not all have fancy direct laryngoscopes these days but pity those poor docs who still need to use the old head mirrors.

Have you ever wondered why docs in cartoons have a disc on their heads? It dates back to the 60s when most kids have their tonsils and adenoids removed. It was the commonest encounter for a kid with a doctor. The image has stuck. 

But head mirrors are really hard to use. You have to be very careful in moving your own head to get good concentric illumination. In the following video, you can briefly see this doc using one:
